Emma spent five weeks in Costa Rica on her LEAP adventure 🇨🇷 She really made the most of her time there, taking a Spanish language course, doing an internship at an art gallery, and spending the final fortnight hiking and hosteling around the country.
“My first solo trip was a jam packed five weeks full of new experiences and environments that vastly grew my confidence and independence. Relying on new language skills and having to quickly build relationships within a team, my ability to adapt to change and navigate different situations was fostered. I am very grateful for the opportunity LEAP provided for me to have experiences that both directly related to my degree and future career as well as those opportunities that were enriching in other ways.“

“This summer with the help of my LEAP internship grant I was able to travel to the Czech Republic to participate in an archaeological dig based in two different sites in Bohemia.
It was an amazing privilege to be part of a dig like this. It has also helped to further my experience in the field and it has allowed me to carry out my fieldwork in an area that I never thought was possible! It also tested my courage and self confidence and has helped me feel more confident and capable.”

Di’Mario used his LEAP Adventure Grant to fund a trip to Thailand where he undertook environmental conservation in Hua Hin 🇹🇭
“This was unlike any experience I have ever had because I seldom travel outside of the UK. In fact, this was only my second time outside of the UK and first time outside of Europe! From the food to the amazing hospitality, there are so many things I enjoyed about the two weeks that I spent there.
If you get the chance to do something out of your comfort zone, to travel or to volunteer, I highly recommend it.”

Thank you to the Master of Pembroke, Lord Chris Smith, for sharing his lessons in leadership with the LEAP Cohort this evening.
His top tips were:
1) See the big picture & give everyone in your organisation a sense of purpose
2) Success doesn’t always come in a straight line - keep your goal in view & don’t be deterred
3) Be prepared to fail
4) Hold your nerve
5) Leadership is not about being out front & telling everyone to follow. Build relationships and bring everyone on a common journey
6) Know yourself
Wise words!
