Over the past summer, I completed the Civil Service Fast Stream Summer Internship Programme (SIP), placed within the Cabinet Office. My role was primarily focused on data science and analytics, working within the National Situation Centre (SitCen), COBR Directorate. The team forms a crucial role within the UK government’s system for handling emergencies and major national challenges. The SitCen’s role is to provide senior decision-makers with a clear, up-to-date picture of fast-moving events; whether this is a natural disaster, a major national security incident, or any other situation which could affect the country. The team synthesises a range of information, spanning multiple government departments, and delivers analytics which reach 10 Downing Street and COBR meetings. Having the opportunity to work within the COBR Directorate is something I deeply value, having gained insight on how national response is coordinated across ministers, senior officials, and experts in the field in such critical times.
Whilst I cannot share details of specific projects I took part in during my internship – completing it required security clearance, and therefore my work falls under the Official Secrets Act – I gained hands-on experience with Python, version control, cloud computing and geospatial analysis; deepening my understanding of data-driven decision-making. I had the amazing opportunity to lead a bespoke analysis for HM Treasury, providing insights applied at a national scale. As the lead analyst, I coordinated with my Deputy Director and the external stakeholder to define the project objectives, and planned the end-to-end execution over the course of two weeks. This included integrating multiple data sources, and continuous communication with both my team and the stakeholder to ensure the delivery of actionable insights, informing strategy and policy creation across multiple government departments. Working within such a fast-paced and dynamic team, central to national crisis response, was incredible for my personal development: it strengthened my ability to adapt quickly, prioritise effectively, and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams spanning the wider UK government.
Another highlight of my internship was when I received the opportunity for a tour around 10 Downing Street. While speaking with the Prime Minister was certainly memorable, it paled in comparison to meeting Larry the cat. Experiencing the historic rooms and walking the corridors where countless important decisions have been made was an unforgettable visit.
I feel immensely grateful to have been placed not only within the Cabinet Office, but also within the COBR Directorate. Due to the nature of the Fast Stream, the range of roles and departments available is extensive, providing interns with a broad spectrum of development opportunities, and building upon my coding skills within such an exceptional environment has been invaluable. Making the commute to 70 Whitehall every day never lost its excitement, and the conversations I had exposure to during my placement still amaze me – facilitated by the generous LEAP grant, which helped fund my summer in London.
Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time within the SitCen and my experience on the Fast Stream SIP. The internship has not only strengthened my technical skills and analytical thinking but also provided an invaluable insight into how the Civil Service operates at the highest levels during critical national events. Experiencing the coordination, speed, and precision required in national crisis response has been both inspiring and humbling, and it has deepened my appreciation for the dedication of those working across government to keep the country safe and resilient. The skills, experiences, and perspectives I have gained during this summer will continue to shape my professional development, and I am proud to have contributed to the vital work of the SitCen and COBR Directorate.
